Topic: Aussie Superbike Champ Aims To Close The Gap At Winton

Reigning Australian Superbike and Supersport champion Adam Fergusson is looking to get his championship defence back on track at the Winton round of the seven-round YMF Loan Australian Superbike Championship.

The Joe Rocket Honda rider created history in 2004 by becoming the first rider to win both the national Superbike and Supersport crowns in the one season, but got off to a sluggish start in 2005 when he struggled with bike set-up at the opening two rounds.

Since then the Victorian has come on strong, although he still has a sizable points gap to bridge in both classes. Fergusson lies third in the Superbike class and 28pts off the lead, and second in the Supersport class, 16pts behind teammate Josh Brookes.

"The Superbike and Supersport titles are looking as if they will go right down to the wire this year," said Fergusson in his recent column in Australian Motorcycle News. "Shawn (Giles) is on a roll at the moment, and he needs to be stopped right now if we are going to have a chance at all.

"One good point for me is that Winton is a circuit that I like. Last year I managed to win all three Superbike races, and I got two wins and a second on the 600, and I am hoping to make it a clean sweep this year," added Fergusson, who holds the Superbike lap record at the 3km circuit.

"Winton is a very technical track that barely gives you any rest. You need to break it up into sections to get the best possible lap times. If you charge really deep into one corner, it will mess you up for the next three, so you have to adopt a smooth flowing style and concentrate on keeping up your corner speed," explained Fergusson.

"Outright power is not an option here either. In fact, I would almost consider using a lower spec engine just to make it a bit easier to ride. When you are competing in two classes, and having to complete 68 race laps in one day, you want it to be as easy as possible on the mind as well as the body.

"I recently obtained the services of a personal trainer, to make sure that I am in the best possible shape to try and fight for the Superbike and Supersport titles. If I thought I was reasonably fit before, I had absolutely no idea what was about to hit me. My basic training program is six days a week, with two to three runs ranging from 6-15km, two weight sessions, three swim sessions per week, plus spin cycles, mountainbike riding and circuit sessions."
